Biodiesel Amsterdam and Rotie receive Better Biofuel Certificate

In April 2011 Biodiesel Amsterdam and Rotie received the Better Biofuel Certificate from Control Union Certifications. Rotie recycles used cooking oils, which Biodiesel Amsterdam uses to produce second generation biodiesel. Waste is thus given a new life as clean energy.

The Better Biofuel Certificate means recognition of the fact that the biofuel produced by Biodiesel Amsterdam and Rotie conforms to Dutch regulations for socalled double counting ('dubbeltelling').

In 2009 the Dutch minister of Environment introduced the Regulation for double counting better biofuels ('Regeling dubbeltelling betere biobrandstoffen'). This means biofuels which achieve a greater CO2 emission reduction are benefited and indirectly financially compensated. Oil companies that use biodiesel from used cooking oils are required to blend only 2 percent instead of 4 percent.

The regulation for better biofuels applies to biofuels produced from waste and residues. It specifically concerns raw materials not suitable except for producing energy, and which do not cause conflicts with food production.

In 2005 a European blending requirement was introduced for blending biofuels with gasoline and diesel. In 2020, all gasoline and diesel need to contain 10 percent biofuels. This means that (by today's consumption level) 800 million liters of biodiesel will be needed by 2020 for blending with the annual 8 billion liter diesel consumption.
